Richard Hoeck (born 1965, Hall in Tirol, Austria) is a Vienna-based multimedia artist working in installation, sculpture, performance, photography and video. Hoeck’s work explores worldviews, social conditions, and the possibilities of perception. In recent years, Hoeck has increasingly devoted his attention to the changing relationship between haptics and optics, between body and image. Together with his long-time collaborator John Miller, they use the inherent materiality of mannequins to explore bodies, surfaces, and transformation as displacement grows due to more of our life happening in the digital space.

Richard Hoeck / John Miller
published by WhiteWalls, Inc
Paperback, 54 Pages, English
ISBN: 0945323263 / ISBN: 978-0945323266
This book brings together for the first time an influential series of sculptures made with department store mannequins that American artist and writer John Miller created, often in collaboration with Austrian artist Richard Hoeck. The book is built around beautifully reproduced full-page photographs of all the mannequin works, which were widely praised when first exhibited and have proved enduringly influential since. Rounding out the book is a revealing interview with Miller by curator and critic Bob Nickas, a longtime friend of Miller. The result is a book that will appeal to any fans of contemporary art.

“Richard Hoeck’s installation is self-reflexively concerned with the significance of the Western genre as a representation of American culture, but from a European perspective” (John Miller). “White Studies” was about iconographies of US-American everyday culture implanted into the high-cultural environment of Karlsplatz.
